Perma Bilt Furniture February 13, 1976 |
Penndel Boroughs Largest fire on record Perma Bilt Furniture February 13, 1976. Dispatched
for an investigation in the area of the railroad tracks and Comly Avenue the first arriving
Assistant Chief had his hands full.
The complex located at 40 Hulmeville Avenue had two
twin 2 story buildings from side 1 and a 3 story building from side 3, 200' x 500' heavy
timber constructed buildings and one was well involved on arrival. Fire Companies from all
over Lower Bucks County rendered assistance in controlling the large manufacturing warehouse
fire. The battle lasted for two days, and the firefighters' efforts paid off because they
saved the exposure building. Crews were on scene for days after hitting hot spots.
Numerous duel 2 1/2" and 3 1/2" supply lines were laid from hydrants over 2000' away and water
was even recycled from a creek that ran behind the building and pumped back up to the fire
grounds.
The exposure building is still standing today had a two alarm fire in 1995 that started
in a dumpster on the rear loading doc and made its way into the building and up to the second
floor. The building was repaired and is still open today; it's now known as the Mattress Mart.
